TIG Welding 101

Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding, is an arc welding process that produces the weld with a non-consumable tungsten electrode. TIG welding is most suitable for thin sheet material, high quality, or precision welding. It’s a more advanced process to learn in comparison to MIG welding, requiring good hand-eye (and foot) coordination. Join us in our small, 2-person class and make some rainbows!

Duration: 3 hours – you must arrive 15 minutes before the start time to participate. The class will start as scheduled, please be respectful to the instructor and other participants by arriving on time.

Time: 6:00pm-9:00pm (please note the class may exceed 3 hours and go until 9:30)

3 sessions – Wednesday evening February 7th, 14th, 21st

Maximum Participants: two (2)

Difficulty: Advanced

Prerequisites: Tool Orientation: The Basics of Welding You must take the introductory class prior to taking the Advanced class.

Class Goals:

Our instructor will explain the mechanics of the tool and carry out an orientation to demonstrate their function. You will then be authorized to use the tools independently and receive ample practice time over 2 courses.

After the orientation, members at Maker Cube will be able to use the tools covered in the orientation after the successful completion of the orientation.

Skills Learned:

– You will learn how to properly set up and adjust the TIG welding machine and the torch.

– How to prepare tungsten and your material

– How to troubleshoot issues when welding

– Learning about when and where Fusion welding vs Filler welding

Safety First

Required:

  • Welding Mask (it is strongly recommended that participants bring their own welding shield, if a participant does not have a welding mask, a sanitized welding mask will be provided)
  • Eye Protection (participants must bring their own eye protection if they do not have eye protection a pair can be borrowed or purchased)
  • Closed Toed Shoes (preferably boots)
  • Denim jeans
  • Long sleeves
  • Long hair tied back
  • No loose jewelry
  • No flammable materials (synthetic material such as polyester, nylon etc.)

Recommended:

  • Steel toed boots
  • A baseball cap

About the Instructor :

Corey Gerard – Welding Instructor at Maker Cube

Corey’s interest in fabrication began in 2012 when he started working for a water jet company. After a few years of building a strong skill set in metallurgy, precision measures and water jet cutting, Corey began a new career path working for foundation mechanical. At his new career he has expanded his welding skills while learning how to build brewery equipment and gained experience in laser cutting, graphic design and brewing beer!

In his space time when he’s not tinkering at Maker Cube, Corey enjoys; rock climbing in the summer, snow boarding in the winter, playing guitar and drinking an ice cold beer.

FAQS

What is the age limit for the class?

The minimum age for participants is 14. Participants under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian provide supervision during the class.

Where can I park ?

Maker Cube’s parking lot has ample space available. Should the lot reach capacity, there is street parking along 206A St.

How do I cancel or reschedule a class?

Refunds or credit for future classes will only be provided if we are notified by email to [email protected] at least 24 hours in advance of the class. No refunds will be provided for late cancellation, and a re-booking fee of 50% of the cost of the class will be applied to reschedule a class.

Please arrive 15 minutes before the class for sign-in and to ensure it starts on time, those arriving more than 5 minutes late will not be able to attend. In the event of low registration the class will be canceled and participants registered will be rescheduled to an alternate class date.
