Frequently Asked Questions
Is this VCarve class beginner-friendly?
Yes – perfect for first-timers. Aside from basic computer literacy, no previous experience is required. We start at the beginning and get you hands-on quickly with drawing in VCarve.
Can I eat during the VCarve class?
Lidded water bottles are welcome. Please keep food out of the computer lab to maintain a clean, safe work environment. Quick snacks are okay in our reception area before/after class.
What should I bring with me?
If you have your own laptop and mouse, you are welcome to bring it. Make sure to download the VCarve Pro trial ahead of time and install it. Note that it is only available on Windows operating systems. Members of Maker Cube receive a single seat free license as part of membership benefits. Speak to staff to get your invite.
I don't have a laptop, can I borrow one?
No worries! We have several communal computers available for the class with the software already set up. These computers are also available to members any time for design and file set up.
Does VCarve work on MacOS?
VCarve is only available on Windows operating systems. To run VCarve on a Mac you will need to either dual boot or use a Virtual Machine (VM) software like Parallels to emulate Windows and run VCarve inside of that.
What file types does VCarve work with? Can I bring my own files?
VCarve uses it’s own file type for project files (.CRV) but is able to import a variety of other vector filetypes such as AI, SVG, DXF and can also import raster images like JPG, PNG, and BMP. VCarve can also import 3D models as STL and OBJ files for preparing tool paths for 3D carving.
During the class we will go over the process of importing files and converting images into vector formats. If you have a logo or small image file you would like to experiment with, feel free to bring it to incorporate into your project file.
Is VCarve free?
VCarve is a licensed software with annual subscriptions. Personal licenses can be purchased from their website. Maker Cube has a Maker Space License which allows us to redistribute single seat licenses to our active membership at no additional cost. Member licenses permit the users to produce design files at home without the software expiring, however exporting output files such as vector formats or toolpath gcode is restricted to physical computers at Maker Cube.
How do I save/export VCarve files to use at Maker Cube?
You must have a Maker Space Member license and be signed into the VCarve Pro Trial before you start designing your file. If you are signed in, you can save your project as a CRV Vcarve Project file then bring it to Maker Cube. On one of our communal computers you can then open the VCarve Pro Makerspace Edition. Open your file and then you will be able to export your output files.
What is the minimum age limit for the VCarve class?
This class is designed for adults. Reach out if you’re inquiring about a mature teen—we can advise on suitability and supervision requirements.
