Instructor: Corey Gerard
Corey’s interest in fabrication began in 2012 when he started working for a water jet company. After a few years of building a strong skill set in metallurgy, precision measures and water jet cutting, Corey began a new career path working for foundation mechanical. At his new career he has expanded his welding skills while learning how to build brewery equipment and gained experience in laser cutting, graphic design and brewing beer!
In his space time when he’s not tinkering at Maker Cube, Corey enjoys; rock climbing in the summer, snow boarding in the winter, playing guitar and drinking an ice cold beer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this welding class beginner-friendly?
Yes. This is an intro welding class—no prior metalwork required. We start with safety, machine setup, and simple practice joints before you assemble your rocket stove.
What is the minimum age limit for the welding class?
The minimum age for participants is 14. Participants under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian provide supervision during the class.
Can I eat during the welding class?
For safety (dust, tools, and finishes), no food is permitted in the shop. Please bring a closed-lid water bottle to stay hydrated. We sell small snacks and refreshments at reception—feel free to enjoy them there during our short break.
What should I wear for welding?
Long pants and long-sleeve natural fibers (denim/cotton), closed-toe leather or work shoes/boots. No synthetics (polyester/nylon/leggings), no shorts, no frays. Tie back long hair; remove dangling jewelry.
Is PPE provided? Can I bring my own?
We provide auto-darkening welding helmets, ear plugs, safety glasses, and gloves. You’re welcome to bring your own PPE; the instructor will check it for suitability.
Can I bring my own steel or tools?
For consistency and safety, materials and consumables are supplied. Personal tools are not needed for this welding class. After completion of the class and registration of membership you are welcome to bring your own materials and tools to create your own projects.
Is the rocket stove safe to use afterward?
Use outdoors only on a non-flammable surface, away from structures. Expect smoke on the first burn as oils/finishes flash off; follow common-sense fire safety at all times.
Does this class authorize me to use the MIG welder at Maker Cube?
Yes – this is a welding orientation. On successful completion and membership registration you’ll be authorized to use MIG equipment independently at Maker Cube (subject to staff sign-off and shop rules).
I already have welding experience/certification—can I skip the orientation?
We love that you’re experienced, but all users must complete Maker Cube’s MIG Welding orientation before using the shop. This session is our shop-specific safety and operations briefing—covering our tools and settings, ventilation and grinder protocols, traffic flow, PPE, housekeeping, and expectations for shared spaces. Even skilled welders bring habits from other shops; the orientation aligns everyone to our standards so we keep the space safe and consistent for all. We’ll pace accordingly for experienced welders and tailor coaching but completion of our Welding orientation is required for authorization.
Do you offer any other welding classes?
Yes! We also offer a more in-depth multisession TIG welding class. Click here to find more details.

What if I’m late?
Safety instructions are covered at the very beginning of the class. Those who are arriving late may not be admitted to the workshop if they have missed this.
