Frequently Asked Questions

Is this class beginner-friendly?

Yes—this is a beginner woodworking workshop. No experience needed; we’ll guide you on tools and safety.

What is the minimum age limit for the class?

The minimum age for participants is 14. Participants under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian provide supervision during the class.

Can I eat during the class?

For safety (dust, tools, and finishes), no food is permitted in the shop. Please bring a closed-lid water bottle to stay hydrated. We sell small snacks and refreshments at reception—feel free to enjoy them there during our short break.

What should I bring with me?

Safety First

General attire requirements:

  • Safety Glasses (participants must bring their own eye protection, if they do not have eye protection a pair of safety glasses can be purchased at Maker Cube’s front counter)
  • Mask (if you have sensitivities to sawdust/airborne dust, also available for purchase at the front counter)
  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Long hair tied back
  • No loose jewelry or cords
  • No long sleeved shirts or loose clothing

Fuel your creativity! With a brief break in this 3.5-hour class, a closed-lid water bottle and a small snack are great to have on hand.

Is the finish food-safe?

Yes. We use a food-safe oil/wax finish, our own in-house product called Wood Waker. You can use your board after class; we recommend letting the oil soak for 24 hours, then wiping off and buffing any excess. For more information about Wood Waker click here.

Can I bring my own wood?

We provide kiln-dried lumber selected for this project. For safety and quality reasons, outside materials aren’t permitted.

Can I personalize my board?

Yes—optional laser engraving is available through our makerspace. Ask at reception for pricing and turnaround.

I already have Woodworking experience/certification—can I skip the orientation?

We’re glad you’ve got experience, but all users must complete Maker Cube’s Woodworking orientation before using the shop. This session is our shop-specific safety and operations briefing—covering safe setup with guards/riving knife, kickback prevention and safe zones, feed direction, miter saw protocols, dust collection and air quality, PPE, material handling, housekeeping, and shared-space expectations. Even seasoned woodworkers bring habits from other shops; the orientation aligns everyone to our standards so the space stays safe and consistent for all. We’ll pace efficiently for experienced users but completion of our Woodworking orientation is required for authorization.
