Frequently Asked Questions

Is this 3D Printing class beginner-friendly?

This class is perfect for beginners or anyone curious about how 3D printing works. Aside from basic computer literacy, no prior experience is needed! If you’ve ever wanted to turn your ideas into real objects, this workshop will give you the confidence and skills to get started.

Can I eat during the 3D Printing class?

Lidded water bottles are welcome. Please keep food out of the computer lab to maintain a clean, safe work environment. Quick snacks are okay in our reception area before/after class.

What will I learn in this 3D Printing workshop?

You’ll learn the basics of FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) printers, the most common type of 3D printer. We’ll cover printer components, materials, slicer settings, supports, and troubleshooting. You’ll also get hands-on experience with Ultimaker Cura—the slicing software used to prepare your 3D prints.

Do I get to make something during class?

Yes! Every participant will slice and print their own animal-shaped keychain phone holder during the session. It’s a fun and practical first project to take home and show off your new 3D printing skills.

What should I bring with me?

All materials and software are provided. Just bring your curiosity, creativity, and a few ideas for what you might like to print in the future! We have workstations already set up with the software. If you have your own laptop and mouse, you are welcome to bring it, make sure to download Ultimaker Cura ahead of time and install it.

Can I bring my own 3D model to print during the class?

Unfortunately, due to the time constraints of the class, files will be limited to a set of pre-determined files that we know will finish by the end of the class. You are welcome to bring your file regardless and our instructor can provide some insight as to how you can prepare your model. With membership, you can run your file on our printers on your own time after the class.

What file types does Ultimaker Cura work with?

Ultimaker Cura can import STL, OBJ, and 3MF files for 3D geometry. It can also import raster images like JPG, PNG, and BMP which can be converted into reliefs to be printed.

What equipment will I be using?

Maker Cube has many printers to choose from. The machines used in the class are the Prusa i3 mk3, Anycubic Mega, and the Ender 3 Neo v2.

We also have a Creality CR10 5s for large format printing, Anycubic Mono X for resin printing, and Bambu X1Cs (staff operated only) for more advanced printing.

Is this class required before I can use the 3D printers at Maker Cube?

Yes. Completion of this class is part of your tool access orientation for Maker Cube’s 3D printers. Once you’ve completed it, you’ll be approved to reserve and use our 3D printing station independently.

What is the minimum age limit for the 3D Printing class?

This class is designed for adults. Reach out if you’re inquiring about a mature teen—we can advise on suitability and supervision requirements.

Where are you located?

We are located at Maker Cube, 5947 206A Street, Langley, BC, in the heart of the Fraser Valley.

Conveniently positioned in Metro Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, our makerspace is easily accessible from Coquitlam, New Westminister, White Rock, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, Mission, Surrey, Abbotsford, and Chilliwack. Safety instructions are covered at the very beginning of the class. Those who are arriving late may not be admitted to the workshop if they have missed this.
